Amarr Cable & Drum Replacement: The Grand Prairie Owner’s Guide

Amarr cable and drum replacement in Grand Prairie typically runs $130-$250 installed, and we stock the common Amarr drum sizes and 1/8-inch and 3/32-inch aircraft-grade cables on every truck. Most replacements are finished in under two hours, same day, because the parts travel with us. You’ll usually notice the problem when the door hangs crooked, cables look frayed near the bottom bracket, or the drum has chewed grooves from a slipped cable.

Which Amarr Models This Applies To

Amarr has built doors under several series names over the years, and the drum and cable setup varies by door weight and track configuration. The Heritage, Stratford, and Lincoln series from the 2000s and 2010s most commonly use a standard 12-inch or 16-inch radius drum with 1/8-inch galvanized cable. The newer Oak Summit and Hillcrest lines sometimes ship with a lighter 3/32-inch cable on single-car doors, which wears faster in Grand Prairie’s heat and UV exposure.

To identify your part, check the label on the interior side of the door panel for the model series and date of manufacture. The drum itself carries a casting number on its hub face. Amarr OEM drums are stamped with the Amarr logo and a part prefix; quality aftermarket equivalents from DURA-LIFT and Prime-Line match the same torsion spring wire size and drum circumference but cost less and carry the same load rating. We keep both on the truck because some Grand Prairie homeowners want the factory stamp, and others want a square deal on a part that meets the same spec.

One compatibility gotcha: Amarr doors built before 1998 sometimes used a left-hand wind drum with reverse cable routing. A standard replacement drum installed on these doors will wind backward and fail within weeks. We check wind direction and cable anchor position before quoting the job.

Signs Your Amarr Cable & Drum Replacement Is Failing

  • The door hangs crooked or one side rises faster. When one cable frays or a drum slips on the torsion tube, the lift becomes uneven. The door twists in the tracks, and the gap at the bottom seal grows wider on one side. Left alone, this strains the opener rail and the remaining good cable.
  • Frayed or rust-kinked cable near the bottom bracket. Grand Prairie’s humidity swings and occasional hard rains corrode cable strands from the bottom up, where the cable loops through the bracket and collects grit. A single broken strand is a warning; a visible kink means the cable has already yielded and will snap under load.
  • Grooved or galled drum surface. A cable that slips under tension cuts a spiral groove into the cast aluminum drum. Once the groove depth exceeds 1/16 inch, the cable seats unevenly and the door chatters during opening. The drum must be replaced; smoothing it is not a repair.
  • Cable unwinds from the drum completely when the door is closed. This points to a cracked drum hub or a worn set screw that no longer grips the torsion tube squarely. The drum spins free, the cable drops slack, and the door can fall off track if operated.
  • Sudden loud bang from the garage, then a door that won’t move. A cable snap releases tension instantly. The remaining cable and spring now carry double load, which often causes secondary failure within days. Do not operate the door; the imbalance can pull the door out of the vertical tracks.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Amarr cable and drum replacement in Grand Prairie runs $130-$250 installed, depending on whether one or both cables need replacement and whether the drum set shows wear. A single cable swap on a standard 16-by-7 door sits at the lower end. Both cables plus both drums on a heavier insulated door, or a door with high-lift track, runs toward the upper end.

Every quote we give is the flat price before the wrench comes out. That price covers the cables, drums, winding and safety checks, lubrication of rollers and hinges, and a written 90-Day Done Right Promise. If the work is not right, we return at no charge. No paperwork battle, no argument. We also check the torsion spring balance while we’re there; an unbalanced spring is what usually causes the cable and drum damage in the first place.

Seniors and veterans receive our standing 5% discount. Repairs over $250 qualify for $50 off.

DIY or Call Us?

There is one safe check a homeowner can make: with the door closed and the opener disconnected, visually inspect the cables and drums from a step stool. Look for fraying, rust, or grooves. Do not touch the cables or the torsion hardware. The springs above the door are under hundreds of pounds of torque, and a cable under tension can slice skin or worse.

Replacing cables and drums requires releasing torsion spring tension with winding bars, a procedure that has sent trained technicians to the hospital. The drum set screws must seat perfectly square on the tube, or the cable will walk and fail again within months. We do not recommend DIY on this repair. Carl Dutton and our crew carry the right bars, the right drums for your Amarr model, and the experience to spot the underlying cause so it does not repeat.
